Alys Mackyntoich (Herald Extraordinaire)

Herald Extraordinaire
Known World Heralds and Scribes Symposium, Barony of the Bridge
Awarded June 23, AS XLVII (47)

June 13, 2012: When I opened the assignment email from the Signet, I was excited to read the following -

"[...]The Herald Extraordinaire title is a title infrequently given from time to time by the Brigantia Herald to those heralds who have gone above and beyond normal duties in heraldry. This is the first time the Office of the Signet has been asked to produce scrolls for this recognition, and it has been requested that the scrolls only be done in calligraphy (an illuminated capital with calligraphy is OK if document style is not possible).[...]"

I'm excited because it's not very often that I'm specifically asked to produce an award in the style of a historical document, i.e., JUST calligraphy. I know Alys will appreciate the style of a legal document.

June 25, 2012: This came up elsewhere, but I would have liked to have seen a seal on this document to give it a more finished feel.

Details:
Calligraphy by Isabel Chamberlaine. Inspired by various 15th century legal documents found in the collection of the British Library.

Paper: Peramenata, 230gsm, Natural
Materials: Oak Gall ink, Mitchell No.4 nib.

Words by Rowen Brigantia, in the style of a grant of Arms to John Alfrey, 1459/60

To all those who shall see or hear these present letters, Rowen Cloteworthy, otherwise called Brigantia Principal Herald of the East, sends greetings and all humble recommendation. It is a right and just thing that persons offering service both exemplary and lengthy be rewarded for their merits by renown and in all places with great honour. Therefore I, with the drawing of this charter, by the right of my office, and with the full knowledge and blessing of the Crown, in recognition of long-pursued efforts on behalf of the College and of heraldry, do hereby name, appoint, and endow Alys Mackyntoich with the style of Herald Extraordinaire and furthermore charge that the aforesaid consult the Laurel College of Arms with the intent to register a title suitable for this new station. In witness whereof I, Brigantia Principal Herald above named, have signed with my hand and sealed with my seal these presents, made and given the 23rd day of June, Anno Societatis XLVII, in the Court of Their Majesties Kenric and Avelina, in Their Barony of the Bridge at the Known World Heraldic and Scribal Symposium.
